Fines - Fairer and Firmer banner
A Victorian Government Initiative Victoria - The Place to Be

In 2006 the Victorian Government changed the infringements system to ensure a fairer and firmer fine system for everyone.
The changes included:

The introduction of payment plans up-front
Those who have trouble paying a fine in one lump sum can apply to the agency who issued the fine to pay by instalments.

Safeguards
The system contains safeguards for people who are disadvantaged, including the homeless, people with an intellectual disability or a mental health condition, or those suffering serious addictions to drugs or alcohol.

New sanctions
Strict laws apply to fine defaulters. Now, an unpaid fine might not just cost you money. Sanctions may include wheel clamping, suspension of driver's licences and motor vehicle registration.

A fee waiver
In early 2006 a four-month fee waiver period was introduced whereby additional fees and costs incurred on top of the original fine were waived. If you entered into a payment plan as a result of the fee waiver, you must continue to make your payment otherwise you will risk defaulting on your plan. If you do default, you will be liable for all previously waived fees and costs, plus any new fees and costs, in addition to the original outstanding fine amount.
